When I told my professor to look forward to reading my proposal as it would be "the perfect treat to end your day," he replied: "I am married; I can think of plenty of more perfect treats to end my day--if your proposal beats physical intimacy, you've got one hell if a paper."

I always thought I was a bit bamf, but I think I'm getting old: when at the bounce gym, suddenly instead of being limber and reckless I discovered new adjectives like yelpy and anticlimactic.

Turns out, punching your broken laptop isn't strong enough incentive to entice it back into optimal performance.

Blasting Debussy while researching will make everything you write seem like utter brilliance.

November 14, 2012

I saw a little old man shuffling out of Costco with his only purchase cradled in the crook of his elbow: a bouquet of bright flowers...and I imagined his careful shaking hands as he slipped them in a glass vase on the kitchen table, prodding the flowers to fall just so, and his wife walking in before he was finished, stopping in the door frame to watch him arrange his love on the table.

November 11, 2012

I feel like everything I could ever want is at my fingertips and all I have to do is beckon.

November 10, 2012

People are simply brains, thoughts and emotions, in different casings.

November 9, 2012

Wet puffs of snow falling and rising all day makes everything but cuddling up on the couch with a Christmas movie and hot cocoa sound like wisdom teeth extraction.

Thanks to English 452, I get to think things like this: The shift to democracy was not happenstance, but an expression of the change in the economy: the vote is the structure that embodies capitalism and also ensures that capitalism itself is not voted out.

Being a creative nonfictioneer is très revealing (for good or for bad or for frozen-notbreathing-noheartbeat terror)!

I sat in a room with an apostle and saw and heard him witness of Christ and my chest ignited and my eyes watered and I knew it was true.

Why don't lips un-chap after guzzling ridiculous amounts of boring water?

November 1, 2012

Today when my students asked me what I dressed up for as Halloween, I learned that "Merida" in just about every foreign language means something really crappy.

October 31, 2012

Halloween consisted of helping to plan a girlie Halloween party for Alli's 12 and 14 year old sisters, then trying (and failing) to Merida-ify my hair, and throwing the awesomest Halloween party the suburbs of SLC have ever seen.

October 30, 2012

While dressed up as art, amidst other people-art, I viewed art, and realized I cannot remember much of the art I learned in my undergrad Humanities classes (oh for shame!).

October 29, 2012

I got to campus at 7:55 a.m., and it is now 11:39 p.m. and I am still in the library (I was not doing homework for a grand total of two hours today).

"Intelligence is living in such a way that the doctrines of the Church are active in us--an active and integral part of who we are, and what we are, and what we do, and what we think."

-David A. Bednar, Increase in Learning pg 75 (read it for an awesome explanation of the interplay of knowledge, understanding, and intelligence)

My life is moving, moving, moving, moving.

No internet at home (construction workers damaged our internet connection) = no research (I have two fairly weighty research-based presentations on Tuesday) = Phantom of the Opera + roommate + Reese's Puffs rap, which of course = success.

October 25, 2012

I watched a BYU-student-made documentary, "I Am Not My Body", about an orphaned Romanian 9-year-old who was burned--third and fourth degree burns over 75% of his little body, losing all fingers, eyelids, and his nose--and his story of coming to America for medical care and reconstructive surgeries and he said something I'll never forget: when he first arrived in the U.S., the doctors told his new family he should take some time to play and be a little boy before they started surgerizing and so they went to parks and zoos and water parks and when the mom asked him, "Are you happy" he said, "How could I be anything but?"

October 24, 2012

Yesterday meant to be productive, but suddenly at 3 p.m. I needed to go Halloween shopping with my favorite human and then I needed to cook dinner (I never do that anymore) and then it was completely necessary to go watch Brave in the dollar theater (mid-week movie? I think YES!) and then I got home and my internet was down and so my friend came over and we talked til 1 a.m. (gasp!) and then my roommates and I sat in our hallway and talked until 2 a.m. (gasp-er!) and then I realized I would not be getting up at 6 a.m. to be productive the next day, either.

October 23, 2012

The afternoon fog slumped down the Wasatch mountains, a ceiling as gray as the long day ahead, beautiful as the prospect of ping pong tonight.
